Oh I do like to be beside the seaside!

I love the british seaside. The colours, the tackiness, the hand painted signs, beachhuts…the list goes on. Here are some photos I took at Southend in Essex

Ten Milk Bottles

Here is another project I completed in my third year. It is a set of books based on the concept of waiting. The poem tells a story of a collection of Ten milk bottles slowly deteriorating on a doorstep while waiting to be taken in. The reader has to compose the poem by finding and placing the right ticket onto the correct page from one book to the other. This is done by matching the code number on each page with the code number on the ticket. Readers have to ‘wait’ for the story to develop.  reading the poem ticket by ticket creates the feeling of time dragging. To emphasise the concept, the poem is printed on tickets used for queuing.

Txt in Calligraphy

This was one of the projects I displayed in my degree show. Here I have used typography to change the way we perceive a piece of language. The final outcome is a series of 5 hand lettered posters displaying mobile phone text language in the style of calligraphy. When translated, calligraphy literally means ‘beautiful writing’. It is a well respected form of hand lettering that takes time effort and skill. Text language on the other hand is about abbreviation and is considered a form of slang. It is often criticised for influencing bad grammar among teens. On first glance of the posters, text language looks respectable and seems to loose its negative associations. It is odd to see something that normally would be typed out quickly, written with care and effort.
